The research department of an established German car-maker is developing highly complex image-processing algorithms for new driver-assistance systems. One example is the highly resolved and exact calculation of the 3D structure in front of the vehicle from the video signals of two cameras. Thanks to this information, future vehicles will be able to assess situations in their immediate proximity and determine the position of vehicles, obstacles and pedestrians, and predict where they will be in the immediate future. SCS experts were tasked with the evaluation of the suitability of these highly complex algorithms for implementation in an automotive-compliant FPGA. The algorithm has now been implemented on the Spartan6 accelerator box developed by SCS and performs calculations 75 times quicker than a commercially available PC. As a third-party supplier to Analog Devices, Texas Instruments and Xilinx, SCS was able to establish itself as a specialist in DSP and FPGA solutions.
