Planning and calculation software for Burckhardt Compression

High Level Software Innovation

Burckhardt Compression is the global market leader in the field of reciprocating compressor systems. The compressors are manufactured by over 2300 employees in the company's own plants in Winterthur, India, USA, Korea and China. The global sales and service network comprises more than 20 subsidiaries and over 40 agents. Burckhardt Compression is present in over 80 countries worldwide.

  • Problem definition

The global growth of Burckhardt Compression AG has created new challenges in the planning, calculation and realisation of compressor systems. Whereas in the past a well-coordinated team of experts at the head office would design a system in detail and then implement it in production, today a large number of processes are interlinked worldwide. At the same time, the areas and countries of application each demand specific standards and requirements.

  • SCS solution

In collaboration with Burckhardt Compression, SCS has implemented the PlantCalc calculation software, which supports engineers in the design of compressor systems. The basis for this is provided by around 60 modules that reflect Burckhardt Compression's 175 years of experience in the construction of compressor systems. The relevant regulations for country- and application-specific standards are integrated with a module.

  • Added value

Several people can work on the same project in PlantCalc. For example, an engineer from Winterthur can work together with an Indian colleague or a Chinese specialist to optimise the design of a plant.

Thanks to numerous import and export interfaces, the plant data is completely electronic.

PlantCalc has now been in use since 2015.

Project insights

Burckhardt Compression is the global market leader in the field of reciprocating compressor systems. The compressors are manufactured by over 2300 employees in the company’s own plants in Winterthur, India, USA, Korea and China. The global sales and service network comprises more than 20 subsidiaries and over 40 agents. Burckhardt Compression is present in over 80 countries worldwide. In order to design and calculate compressor systems efficiently, SCS has developed PlantCalc software in collaboration with Burckhardt Compression.

The data is replicated on several servers worldwide so that work can be carried out efficiently everywhere. PlantCalc automatically knows where the nearest server is located and connects to it.

Burckhardt Compression has offices in China. The government there can use the “Great Firewall of China” to interrupt the Internet connection to the rest of the world at any time. In such a situation, Burckhardt Compression’s engineers can continue working without any problems thanks to our solution. As soon as the interruption has been rectified, the data is automatically synchronised with the rest of the company.
