Imaging procedures such as optical coherence tomography are playing an increasingly important role in ophthalmology. Not all physicians are equally familiar with the visual manifestations of all clinical pictures. Previously, patients often had to visit another specialist for a second opinion. This takes time and can delay the diagnosis.

The SCS Contribution

Together with a design team, SCS developed a web platform for the IOB where physicians can upload anonymized cases and discuss them with experts.

Second Opinion with a Few Clicks

An expert opinion can be reached with just a few clicks, without the patient having to visit a second specialist. This facilitates professional exchange and can accelerate diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Anonymized and Secure

Physicians upload individual cases anonymously to the platform. IOBnet was developed with a modern software architecture and current security mechanisms and is hosted by a Swiss provider.

Cross-Device Upload

OCT scans from various common devices can be uploaded to IOBnet and displayed in a uniform, user-friendly web interface.

Expandable for Knowledge and Research

The platform was designed to be expandable. Planned features included collections of educational case examples and the use of suitable data for research into rare diseases.

Result

With IOBnet, ophthalmologists can exchange anonymized cases with experts and obtain a second opinion without an additional doctor’s visit. This facilitates professional exchange and supports physicians in making better-informed and timely diagnoses and treatment decisions. Furthermore, the platform was designed so that it can be expanded in the future to include educational case examples and applications for research on rare diseases.
