Initial Situation
By the end of 2027, at least 80 percent of all metering devices in a grid area must be intelligent metering systems. Smart meters typically transmit their readings to the grid operator once a day. This is not sufficient for home automation or a detailed analysis of power consumption. At the same time, grid operators must enable their end customers to read real-time measurement data locally. However, the customer interface provided for this purpose delivers the data in technically demanding, partially encrypted, and fragmented formats.

The Contribution of SCS
SCS developed a lean open-source solution in Python for EKZ that runs on a Raspberry Pi, reads, decrypts, and processes the data from the customer interface, and makes it available via MQTT for further use.

Result
With the Smart Meter Toolkit, measured values can be recorded locally at a resolution of 5 to 30 seconds and displayed clearly. End customers can thus analyze their power consumption in near real-time and integrate the data into their home automation via MQTT. Since the software was developed in Python, it can be operated on other Linux platforms in addition to the Raspberry Pi. The software is available as open source on GitHub, as a Python package, and as a ready-to-use Raspberry Pi demo image. SCS manages the project and coordinates the exchange with interested parties and contributors.
