Initial Situation
A packaging line consists of individual system components, each with its own local control. A higher-level system must coordinate these machines to ensure orderly starting and stopping. When changing formats, the system components must be reconfigured in the correct sequence. In food and pharmaceutical production, it must also be traceable at all times which product was produced and packaged when and where.

SCS’s Contribution
SCS developed a central Line Management System for Schubert that connects local machine controls via OPC UA and MQTT, and simultaneously handles communication with higher-level production systems such as SAP.

Result
With the Line Management System, an entire packaging line can be centrally configured, controlled, and monitored. Production data, serial numbers, and status information are consistently processed across the entire line and exchanged with higher-level systems. The system is also designed for operational interruptions. The software detects power outages, a small emergency power supply supports controlled operation, and the system can be reliably restarted after an emergency stop or power outage. SCS and Schubert have been working together since 2007. The shared system knowledge built up over the years shortens coordination paths and enables efficient further development of the LMS.
