This requires a system that efficiently archives newly produced material, quickly searches millions of existing items, and provides selected media immediately for further processing.

The Contribution of SCS

On behalf of SRF, SCS developed the Faro media archive, which captures newly produced broadcasts largely automatically, makes them searchable, and provides them for reuse.

Largely Automated Capture

New broadcasts are archived largely automatically along with extensive metadata. Speech-to-text supports the recording process, while documentarians add scene descriptions and usage instructions.

Locatable to the Second

Time-related metadata makes it possible to jump directly to individual quotes or scenes. Searches can be conducted by criteria such as people, locations, events, and spoken content.

Directly to the Editing Suite

Audio and video material found can be transferred directly from Faro to the editing suite and reused there for new segments.

Designed for Millions of Media Objects

Metadata and media data are managed separately, while Elasticsearch enables fast searches within the large archive. A service-based backend in Kubernetes forms the basis for ongoing further development.

Result

Faro makes approximately 1 million video segments and 1.6 million audio segments accessible via a modern web client. Journalists can research archive material with second-by-second precision, preview it directly, and transfer selected content to the editing suite without media disruption. SCS is responsible for the entire development cycle, from requirements clarification and UX design to software development, testing, commissioning, and support. Faro is continuously developed and expanded with new functions.
